Sony launches high-end Bluetooth headphones and earbuds every two years, and from 2021 the WF-1000XM5 true wireless earbuds will replace the WF-1000XM4. Size was one of the main issues with the M4, so the news will no doubt be greeted with a sigh of relief left and right.
Inside the case, we can see that Sony has moved to two pins instead of three to charge the buds, but the case material appears to be matte plastic, similar to that of the M4. It’s very difficult to ascertain the size of the case from the stolen images, but it looks like it could be smaller than the M4.
The case is rated at 5V 230mAh, which is higher than the M4’s case rating of 5V 140mAh, so I hope it charges faster. The LEDs have been moved from inside the case to the front. Of course there is wireless charging.
The WF-1000XM5 is made in China, just like Sony’s LinkBuds S. Certification is underway and leaks are starting to appear, so it could be official soon.
