The heated insoles we’ve seen generally use batteries to generate electrical heat to warm frozen toes. French company Solecooler has a different idea. Bypasses electrical hardware and draws power directly from the foot itself. Its insole uses mechanical energy from the basic stepping motion to drive integrated heating and cooling elements. The reversible, double-sided design allows the wearer to simply flip the sole to achieve the opposite effect when the seasons change.

Whether the wearer places the Climfeet insole cool side up or heat side up, either side works via basic physics to produce the desired effect. When the wearer dismounts, the soft, foam-like pods on the cooling side compress the air into compact, reinforced cells on the warm side, with air compression delivering a heating effect of up to 4 ºC (7.2 °F). produce. Solecooler acknowledges that Climfeet’s effects aren’t as dramatic as battery-powered climate control systems, but says it’s more uniform and avoids the hot spots associated with electrical design. Unlike batteries, it maintains energy as long as the wearer continues to move.
