Samsung’s Galaxy A series will please many, as they look and feel more expensive without costing as much as the Galaxy S models. But the A-series thrives on being “good enough.”
That’s why the arrival of the Galaxy A54 and A34 is so important. Some of the previous entries have become fan favorites and are often featured as recommendations in the comments section. Can the 2023 generation live up to these expectations?
The Samsung Galaxy A34 is no longer just a cheaper version of the A5x model. This year he’s bigger with a 6.6-inch display (vs. 6.4-inch), matching the 120Hz refresh rate (the A33 was his 90Hz only). Furthermore, it has a completely different chipset, the Dimensity 1080.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a display as small as 6.4 inches (the A53 had a 6.5 inch display). However, the new model is no smaller than his 2022 predecessor. It’s certainly 1mm shorter, but 2mm wider and 13g heavier. Both the A54 and A34 have 5,000mAh batteries and can only be charged via 25W wired charging (same as their predecessors). Both are rated IP67. The A54 uses the Samsung-designed Exynos 1380 chipset.

Compared to Dimensity, it uses a different node (5nm Samsung vs. 6nm TSMC) and has twice the number of Cortex-A78 cores (4), but with a lower maximum clock speed (2.4GHz vs. 2.6GHz). GPUs are similar enough to make this an interesting battle. Mali-G68 MP5 for Exynos and G68 MC4 for Dimensity. These are of course just raw numbers. Perhaps a more apt comparison is the Galaxy A52s and its Snapdragon 778G. This is his one of the aforementioned fan-favorite phones. 778G is older, but still comparable to Dimensity 1080. It remains to be seen how it will compare to the Exynos 1380. The A52 had a major flaw. .

What else can you buy for 500 euros? The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G has been on store shelves for over a year now, and although the Snapdragon 888 has aged poorly, this is still a flagship class phone. . The 6.4-inch FHD+ 120Hz display is directly comparable to the A54 panel. Additionally, you get a 12MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, plus an 8MP 3x telephoto lens and 15W wireless charging. It loses some battery capacity (4,500mAh) and doesn’t have a microSD slot like the A-phone.
The Xiaomi 13 Lite made the rare choice to use the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip. It also packs a 6.55-inch 120Hz 12-bit AMOLED display, a 50+8+2MP camera, and a small but fast 4,500mAh battery with 67W wired charging.

what else? With the OnePlus 11R and its 6.74-inch 120Hz display (1,240 x 2,772 pixels), you can go bigger. It also goes without saying that this is powered by a capable Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Also, the 5,000mAh battery supports 100W charging. However, 11R is not available in Europe.
Google Pixel 7 available in Europe, at least in some countries. It’s also a few millimeters smaller than the Galaxy A54 while offering a 6.3-inch FHD+ 90Hz AMOLED display. The Tensor G2 has X1 prime cores, but it’s not the most efficient chip. His main 50MP camera has a large 1/1.31 inch sensor. The battery is small (4,355mAh) and slow to charge 20W wired, but can also charge 20W wirelessly. When it comes to charging, the A54 isn’t a speed fiend.

The 5,000mAh battery can be fast-charged at 67W, and the 50+8+2MP camera rivals the Galaxy. This one doesn’t have a microSD slot, but it does have a 3.5mm jack.
Carl Pei is once again trying to catch lightning in a bottle with the Nothing Phone (1). Its 6.55-inch 120Hz display and his Snapdragon 778G+ chipset are comparable to what Samsung has to offer (this chip also enables his 15W wireless charging). Additionally, it has a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera, with higher resolution than most phones on the market. The 4,500mAh battery can be charged at his 33W. However, he may have to wait for a suitable discount to get the phone (1) for €400 (although I’ve seen that price several times).

The vivo V27 gets even bigger with a 6.78-inch display (FHD+ 120Hz) and uses MediaTek’s new mid-range chip, the Dimensity 7200. 50+8+2MP trio on the back. The 4,600mAh battery charges at 66W.
