The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has revealed plans to build the world’s largest spokeless Ferris wheel. The gigantic metal ring reaches an impressive maximum height of 180 m (590 ft) and offers visitors stunning views of the beautiful Korean landscape.
In addition to claiming to be the world’s largest spokeless Ferris wheel, SMG says the aptly named Soul Ring will be the second largest Ferris wheel in the world. Today, the top spot is Ain Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, reaching 250 m (820 ft) in height. However, Staten Island has another plan named the New York Wheel that, when completed, will reach 192 m (630 ft), which could drop Soulling to his third overall.
Once operational, the amusement park rides will receive approximately 1,470 passengers per hour, with a maximum daily ridership of approximately 11,790. All these people will be powered at least partially from renewable energy, but exactly what this entails has yet to be said.
More detailed details on how it will work are still lacking, but some previously built spokeless Ferris wheels, such as the Weifang attraction in China, are actually being used at fairgrounds around the world. It doesn’t rotate like the typical Ferris wheel seen in Instead, the carriage is pulled around the external rim using a geared system, while the main structure itself remains stationary. A rendering of the Soul Ring suggests that it works as well.

The Seoul Ring will be built on the man-made Nodeul Island in Haneul Park. This Nodeul Island was originally used as a landfill, but over the decades it has been transformed into a popular local landmark relatively close to the North Korean border. An electric self-driving bus is planned to help people get to and from the site, and a cable car system is also being considered.
“Haneul Park is regarded as a symbolic place that represents the harmony and unity of the Korean people, as the gateway to Seoul and a unified Korea, and as a place geographically close to North Korea,” SMG said. The Seoul Ring breaks away from the traditional design of the spoked Ferris wheel and uses innovative technology to create an aesthetically advanced spokeless design.The City of Seoul is committed to the development of construction safety and spokeless design. The project is scheduled to begin construction in 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
