Today Samsung announced a new brand Exynos Connect. It integrates short-range wireless communication solutions such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband (UWB) all under one “roof”.
At the same time, the company announced its first UWB chipset, the Exynos Connect U100. The name is very similar to Apple’s U1 chip that powers the AirTag object tracker, and we think this is no coincidence.

Samsung’s solution comes with distance measurement accuracy within single digit centimeters and less than 5 degrees for use in mobile, automotive and Internet of Things (IoT) devices that provide accurate distance and location information optimized for The U100 integrates radio frequency, baseband, embedded flash memory, and power management IP into a single chip, making it ideal for use in small devices.
The U100 leverages Time of Arrival (ToA) and 3D Angle of Arrival (AoA) measurements to provide the aforementioned levels of accuracy. Samsung says he finds it particularly useful for AR and VR applications when tracking locations indoors or where people need to be tracked accurately and in real time as they move.
The chip has power-saving modes, a scrambled timestamp sequence (STS) feature, and a secure hardware encryption engine to prevent external hacking. The Exynos Connect U100 is certified by the FiRa Consortium for interoperability with his UWB standard. It is also compliant with the Car Connectivity Consortium’s Digital Key Release 3.0, allowing smartphones equipped with the U100 to securely communicate digital keys with the vehicle.
It’s unclear when we’ll see the first devices with this chip built into it, but we think Samsung itself will make good use of it across its product categories.
