Dodge is giving a farewell tour of its Hemi V8 muscle car. We’ve built a series of ‘Last Call’ versions of the Charger and Challenger, limited edition callback paint colors, and retro liveries that reference muscle-packed old Dodges. The 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170 is as quick as the Tesla Model S Plaid showing off his clean shoes in 1.66 seconds. 0-60 mph.
Dodge engineers have done quite a bit of work under the bulging “airgrabber” hood compared to the lesser Daemon. Compared to the Challenger Hellcat Redeye Widebody, it has a larger throttle body and a new supercharger with a pulley that increases boost pressure by he 40%.
Feeding E85 (a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) gives the best results. With this fuel, the Demon 170 he produces a huge power output of 1,025 hp (764 kW) and 945 lb-ft (1,281 Nm). On the more common E10 fuel, the engine produces a slightly milder 900 hp (671 kW) and 810 lb-ft (1,098 Nm).
The driveline has been beefed up with a much stronger rear differential, propshaft and halfshafts to handle the torque, and the car is fitted with special street-legal drag tires. Since the has more oxygen than hot air, it can even divert cold air from the air conditioning system to cool the supercharger intercooler.
Performance on the drag strip is also aided by tuned adaptive dampers that aid in weight transfer. There’s also something called Transbrake 2.0, which Dodge describes as “includes a torque shaping feature. It’s a technology used in competitive drag racing where driver interaction dials in presets. to make it easier to limit the torque.”
These changes make the Demon 170 much faster on the drag strip. Dodge certifies to the National Hot Rod Association his quarter mile time for this car with an elapsed time of 8.91 seconds and a speed across the line that he recorded at 151.17 mph (243 km/h). and faster than the Model S Plaid. Less than 2 seconds on the drag strip. Dodge also received a National Hot Rod Association violation notice stating that without a roll cage or parachute he ran his one-quarter mile in less than nine seconds.
Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis said, “To celebrate the end of the HEMI muscle car era, we’ve pulled all the governors apart to reach a new level of ‘factory crazy’ production car performance. “In 2015, Dodge shocked the world with the 707-horsepower Hellcat. Then in 2018, it did so with the 840-horsepower Demon and is now the world’s first sustainable 1,025-horsepower We’re doing it again with our Demon 170: an energy, eight-second, factory-built, street-legal muscle car.”
Dodge plans to build 3,300 Demon 170s, 3,000 for the US and 300 for Canada. In the US, car prices start at $96,666, and the purchaser must sign a waiver acknowledging that he purchased a street-legal drag racing car.
