Ransomware and data breaches were the most prominent cyber threats to affect the European transport sector last year, according to ENISA, with incidents of the former nearly doubling.
The EU security agency’s industry-first Threat Landscape Report covers the period from January 2021 to October 2022.

More than half (55%) of the incidents tracked by ENISA during this period were attributed to cybercriminals. Hacktivists accounted for another quarter (23%), partly explaining that DDoS attacks surged sixfold from 2% to 13% between 2021 and 2022. .

According to the report, state-sponsored attacks accounted for 15% of all attacks and were primarily aimed at the maritime sector and government transportation authorities.
ENISA Executive Director Juhan Lepassaar said:
“Understanding the distribution, motivations, trends and patterns of cyber threats and their potential impact is critical if we want to improve the cybersecurity of relevant critical infrastructure.”
However, officials acknowledged that their visibility into the threat landscape is limited to publicly reported incidents.
“However, the incidents disclosed by ENISA on the basis of its analysis and conclusions are likely to underestimate the reality where the undisclosed incidents are more important than the published ones,” it warned.
