There are many small towable homes on the market today, but most are no wider than the width of a typical street. The Grande S1 differs in that once unfolded it becomes three times its size in transit.
The S1, which is currently the subject of an Indiegogo campaign, is manufactured by California-based startup PODX GO. The residence features high-strength steel frames, insulated polyurethane wall and roof panels, and laminate-covered plywood floors.
When folded and towed by a super-heavy truck such as the Ford F-250, the structure is 19 feet 7 inches long, 11 feet 6.2 inches high and 7 feet 4.6 inches wide (6 x 3.5 x 2.3 m). The total weight, including towing hardware, is claimed to be 22,000 pounds (9,979 kg).

Once the Grande S1 is parked on a cement pad or elsewhere, it is reported that the two sides can be hydraulically opened in just 15 minutes with the push of a few buttons. It has 364 sq ft (33.8 m) of total floor space and includes a living room/kitchen with countertops, cabinets, refrigerator, and stainless steel sinks and faucets. Bedroom with king size wall bed, fold out wooden desk and cabinets/closets. Bathroom with shower, flush toilet and vanity.
Other amenities include air conditioning, water heaters, CO2/smoke alarms, and standard RV-type water inlets to connect to municipal water systems where available. Buyers can also opt for a solar energy storage system for off-grid use, but with a complete 120-volt electrical system that can be connected to the local grid.

Prospective purchasers can make a US$100, US$2,000, or US$5,000 deposit through the Indiegogo campaign for discounted prices of US$69,000, US$59,000, and US$49,000 respectively. Assuming the Grande S1 reaches production, the suggested retail price is $85,000.
Please note that PODX GO has not yet built a fully functional demo. For now, a portable college dormitory built by a company that operates on the same basic principles can be seen in the video below.
