A ChatGPT bug discovered earlier this week also revealed users’ payment information, according to OpenAI.(opens in new tab).
The AI chatbot was shut down on March 20th due to a bug that exposed new conversation titles and first messages to other users from an active user’s chat history.
Now OpenAI shares that even more private data from a small number of users has been exposed.
“A few hours before we took ChatGPT offline on Monday, some users sent another active user’s first and last name, email address, payment address, last four digits of their credit card number (only), and their credit card. We were able to confirm the expiration date,” said OpenAI. “Full credit card numbers have not been published at any time.”

The time OpenAI mentions was a 9 hour window for the bug to be discovered. OpenAI reports that her payment-related information for 1.2% of ChatGPT Plus subscribers was exposed. These users have been notified by OpenAI. Although it was clearly stated in the announcement, it is unlikely that other users have actually seen this information. Between 1:00am and 10:00am PT, the user opens her ChatGPT Plus subscription confirmation email or[サブスクリプションの管理]I had to go to the page to view the payment information.
The bug has been patched, ChatGPT is working again, and users’ chat histories have been restored. But keep in mind that nothing you share on ChatGPT or anywhere on the internet is 100% private.
