Google has worked on several different features to help users find their way around and pre-learn about big cities. Through a thread, Reddit users seem to have started receiving her Google Maps of her Immersive View update (via 9to5Google). Google’s immersive view is one of the few mentioned at Google I/O 2022. This new view of the map is powered by NeRF technology, which Google says “accurately reproduces the full context of a place, including lighting, material textures, and what’s in the background.” This allows users to navigate city streets without being in a specific location, all from their phones.
Immersive View was originally announced to be released in early February, but users have had to wait and have only recently started receiving it.

The company said Immersive View will initially roll out in several cities (London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo). It will be months before Florence, Venice, Amsterdam and Dublin receive the same 3D treatment.
In addition to viewing the metropolis in 3D, the immersive view allows users to manipulate sliders to adjust the time of day and see how busy the city is at different times of the day. However, the user who posted the rollout of the feature said that the moment they were using it, it seemed like their car was gone.
While this might seem like a neat and fun feature, the Redditor’s comment about this had a caveat. Users said that this feature not only heats up the phone, but also absorbs around 2GB of data in just 30 minutes of use.
Users can also take advantage of the live view of Google Maps. This is available in all cities where the company currently has immersive views. In addition, the ‘Accessible Places’ section of the map provides detailed information on wheelchair-friendly places before departure that day.
The rollout is still slow, as users on Reddit have argued that nothing is showing yet. Only 3D video is displayed. That said, once the feature is on the device, it should be marked as “immersive view” so you may find it.
