Private Japanese spacecraft enters lunar orbit ahead of landing attempt

Japan launched its civilian-led Hakuto-R Mission 1 lunar lander on March 21 at 10:24 JST after completing controlled main engine burn-up in anticipation of a late-April landing attempt. Now that you’re on track, it’s likely you’ll be joining a very exclusive club soon.

Conceived and operated by lunar resource development company ispace, Hakuto-R was launched on December 11, 2022 on a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket. This is a private lunar landing demonstrator that also carries payloads for international customers, including the Japanese government and Rashid rovers. The latest maneuver is the seventh of the mission’s ten milestones and reflects ispace’s cautious approach to deep space exploration. With the launch of the spacecraft as the first step and stable operation on the moon as the tenth, each phase involves careful evaluation and evaluation of the results before the green light for the next step.

Due to the relatively low power output of the Falcon 9 launcher, the Hakuto R made a slow three-month journey using a series of orbital maneuvers to gain enough speed to reach the moon. During this time, mission engineers were able to perform tests on the aircraft’s operational capabilities that would serve later long-range missions. The main engines and attitude thrusters then operated for several minutes for orbit insertion under the supervision of Mission Control in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

If the final milestones go as planned, a date for the moon landing will be determined in the coming weeks.
