A Progressive Web App (or PWA) provides a quick and unique way to access a website and its services without having to install a dedicated application. Now, this means it’s an easy solution for quickly accessing your favorite sites without taking up much of your phone’s storage, and without it being an app.
While iOS allows users to create and use web apps for the long haul, there are some limitations. Also, one popular missing feature was support for push notifications. However, users running iOS 16.4 (and iPadOS 16.4) can now enable them for PWAs. Here’s how to set up and manage such notifications.
How to set up and manage push notifications for Progressive Web Apps on iOS
When receiving alerts from a Progressive Web App, the setup steps can range from as simple as one tap to requiring more steps.
This guide uses the web app for Twitter which has some steps to enable push notifications.
Once you have created the Twitter web app and logged into your account,[設定とサポート]Go to section and follow the steps below:
- choose notification option.
- On the next screen,[設定]Tap.
- next,[プッシュ通知]Select to enable the feature.
- After enabling the feature within the web app, the iPhone[設定]Go to[通知]Tap a submenu.
- If you already have the Twitter app on your phone, like I did, you’ll see another option for Twitter.
- By tapping this option, you can manage your notifications exactly like any application installed from the App Store.
If you remove the PWA from your phone, your configured settings will also be removed.
Progressive web apps get even better on iPhone and iPad
PWA notifications was a feature announced by Apple at last year’s WWDC 2022, with a release date set for 2023. With iOS 16.4, Apple has finally delivered on that promise, making web apps more convenient and user-friendly. This feature is very useful if you have a communication app like WhatsApp that has a PWA but no dedicated iPad application.
