More than 1,100 signatories, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology, signed an open letter stating that all AI labs should immediately suspend training for more powerful AI systems for at least six months. I am asking you to do GPT-4.” The letter says:
Modern AI systems are now capable of competing with humans in common tasks.[3] And we have to ask ourselves: Should machines flood our information channels with propaganda and falsehood? Should all jobs, including fulfilling jobs, be automated? should we develop an inhuman mind that may eventually outnumber, become wiser, obsolete, and replace us? Should we risk losing control of our civilization? Shouldn’t such decisions be delegated to unelected technical leaders? A powerful AI system should only be developed if we are convinced that its effects are positive and the risks are manageable.
It claims that the “level of planning and management” is “unrealized” and instead, an unnamed “AI lab” has been “trapped in an out-of-control development race” in recent months. I keep doing it. Deploying ever more powerful digital minds that no one, not even their creators, can comprehend, predict or reliably control. ”
The letter’s signatories say the moratorium they are seeking should be “public, verifiable, and include all key parties.” If a moratorium “cannot be enacted immediately, the government must step in and set a moratorium,” the letter continues.
