EarthCruiser morphing Hummer EV into off-grid electric super-camper

EarthCruiser kicked off 2023 with updates to its electric Overland camper program, but this time it’s back with a more specific all-electric project: an off-road camper based on the Hummer EV pickup. The Oregon-based expedition vehicle company has partnered directly with his GMC on the build, transforming the highly off-road capable Hummer EV truck into an even more capable land exploration vehicle. The “world’s first all-electric super truck” is about to become the world’s first all-electric super camper.

EarthCruiser is committed to being at the forefront of electric overlanding and was one of the first Overland brands to consider designing an all-electric camper. At a time when even the most established camper makers aren’t quite ready to take fully electric production RVs to the highway, EarthCruiser is pushing them far beyond the pavement. EarthCruiser’s electrification ambitions caught the eye of GMC, where the GM brand is looking to build its own reputation with premium electric trucks and SUVs.

Josh Tavel, GM’s Executive Chief Engineer of Battery Electric Trucks, said: “EarthCruiser products have proven their performance in environments around the world and we are delighted to be part of the next chapter of adventure and exploration.”

GMC is working with EarthCruiser Innovation’s (ECI) research and design department to prepare what it calls a “Next Generation Land Equipment Solution for Electric Vehicles” that will be introduced in the Hummer EV Pickup. We haven’t yet elaborated on what that solution will look like.

EarthCruiser has the most experience building trucks with chassis-mounted living modules, from Australia’s first large expedition camper van to the latest Terranova camper truck. However, the company’s electric camper program has so far focused entirely on slide-in his camper for pickup his bed, and those interested have already started booking his EarthCruiser EV camper in this style. doing. The company also has experience with land-based pickup campers from his GZL lineup of full and midsize slide-ins.

Looking at the first teaser photos released by both companies in Thursday’s announcement, it’s hard to tell for sure what shape the land motorhome module will take now. But the distinctly flared sidewalls and lower fender bulge make it look like a slide-in his pickup his camper riding on a short Hummer bed. The vague contours of the wheel arches and rear bumper further confirm the idea that the camper rests on a Hummer bed.

The uninterrupted, low roof line indicates that EarthCruiser will equip the camper with a distinctive pop-up roof, likely with solar panels. Working directly with GMC could open up the possibility of using the traction battery as a camping power source, but it could still run a separate battery system while using that power to drive a huge multi-ton truck to and from camp. It seems likely that you want to save money on camper equipment.

Whatever the final spec, the new electric expedition rig promises to complement the Hummer EV Pickup’s unique off-road capabilities, including features like the ‘CrabWalk’ and height-adjustable ‘Extract Mode’. increase. -Life module included.

EarthCruiser Founder and CEO Lance Gillies said: “From the Australian outback to the Alaskan wilderness and everywhere in between, Earth Cruisers are built to tackle the toughest terrain. We continue to look at key technologies such as: Electrification brings exciting opportunities for land use, such as precise torque control and ease of use over terrain, in addition to zero emissions.”

GMC and EarthCruiser are set to unveil the Hummer EV camper concept later this summer (northern hemisphere). Assuming they’re building a physical concept, not just a virtual reveal, that timeframe would be good for a possible debut at Overland Expo Mountain West, Colorado.

EarthCruiser has been a longtime regular in the Overland Expo series, and GMC has recently developed a strong relationship with the show. At the 2021 Mountain West Expo, GMC debuted the Canyon AT4 OverlandX build and showcased the Hummer EV Pickup. At Overland Expo West 2022 in Arizona, the show’s own Ultimate Overland Vehicle, an all-out adventure camping his truck built by the Overland Expo organizer on top of his 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X. was a major partner.
