In traditional console games, Microsoft and Sony battle over exclusivity, acquisitions, and fair competition with the FTC as an arbitrator. But in the more niche and new VR space, most “exclusive” games are limited only by hardware limitations rather than contractual deals.
Meta and Sony are rivals in VR, but the Quest 2 and PSVR 2 benefit from (rather than hinder) each other. This is the impression I got when I spoke with several developers at the Game Developer Conference 2023 in San Francisco about upcoming ports of both VR headsets.
Each language is different, but we’ve heard the same core idea: porting a Quest 2 game to PS VR2 shouldn’t take long. Unlike PSVR 1, PSVR 2 uses the same inside-out tracking style as Quest 2, so that port requires no gameplay changes to work.
The relationship is particularly profitable for Sony, given PSVR 2’s sales have been particularly sluggish.
VR Port is easier than ever
Touting the upcoming PSVR 2 and Quest 2 game Pixel Ripped 1978, ARVORE developers Ana Ribeiro and Ricardo Justus told GDC that the third game has a much less painstaking development process than past games. explained.
Ribeiro described the months-long process of getting the Pixel Ripped 1995 to work with the PSVR 1’s archaic PS Eye control scheme. Then with Pixel Ripped 1989, he designed it with PC VR in mind, which made some downgrades difficult. Transfer assets and graphics to your portable Oculus Quest.
For the third time, it’s the Pixel Ripped 1978 charm. First, ARVORE partnered with Atari to borrow the company’s famous arcade his classics and let players dive into his VR. Then they designed it specifically for Quest 2 and upgraded the PSVR 2’s graphics and features, apparently adding only a month or so to development time.
nevertheless the game Looked Great on PSVR 2 as if it was natively designed with increased graphics power in mind. We are already looking forward to the game’s release this summer.

Also at GDC 2023, we spoke with our favorite makers of Demeo, Angry Birds VR, and many other Quest games, Resolution Games, about Spatial Ops, a fun new mixed reality shooter. But we also took the time to ask him about his recent port to PS VR2.
CEO Tommy Palm explained that they already had a dual PC VR/Quest workflow, so incorporating PSVR 2 wasn’t difficult at all. He said that Art his team especially liked his PSVR 2. Because you can include more assets without Quest’s processing limits.
Palm didn’t mention this, but while sales of PC VR games have never been higher, Sony’s more consumer-accessible headsets will attract a larger audience. It is highly likely. fun All these assets make dual workflows more profitable. Of course, it all depends on how well PSVR 2 sells.
Resolution Games is a fairly large studio compared to many indie VR developers who have less resources to consider new technologies like foveated rendering and haptics and port them to PSVR 2. Still, it’s clear that PSVR 2’s launch came with a very large launch library. Resolution and ARVORE weren’t the only developers who found the process fairly seamless.
How Quest 2 paved the way for PSVR 2

Sony let Meta dominate the VR gaming market for years, from the late days of PSVR 1 to the present day.But when PSVR 2 bottom We got the cream of the crop straight from Quest 2’s library, so you can comfortably boot with just two 2D-to-VR updates like the VR-only limited edition (Horizon Call of the Mountain) and Resident Evil Village.
Just a month after launch, we had to narrow down the list of PSVR 2’s best games to make sure it wasn’t too long. New owners won’t be frustrated finding something to play with, knowing that some of Meta’s biggest hits like Beat Saber and Among Us are coming in late 2023.
meta has invested heavily in the VR gaming space, with 150 games in development from third parties that will launch with Quest 2 and/or 3. We haven’t heard anything similar from the Sony camp. We’re lucky that Meta apparently doesn’t claim any exclusive agreements with these developers.
So far, PSVR 2 has only sold around 270,000 in its first month. Considering that the cheap PSVR only sold a million copies a year after him, that’s not a terrible number, given its high price. But 2 million units launch is certainly nowhere near Sony’s internal hopes for his windows.if you’re a developer had When choosing between targeting 20 million Quest 2s and less than 1 million PSVR 2s, the answer is clear.
Hope Sony Pushes More AAA Releases soon Get more interest from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners. But frankly, the developers who have already found success with Quest are taking over Sony, despite Sony itself ignoring it.
Why Quest Will Benefit From PSVR 2’s Presence

Sony’s advantage from this Quest 2/PSVR 2 symbiotic competition is clear. How does Meta benefit from the relationship? It’s a little more opaque, but when it comes to being a big developer, Meta is happy too, I suspect he’ll catch up with Sony.
As the Oculus Publishing initiative proves, Meta needs little help when it comes to the VR community. However, there was not much support from the largest players. Traditional Game developers and their beloved IP since VR’s first wave of popularity circa 2016-2018.
Meta has secured promises of Quest 2’s GTA: San Andreas and Assassin’s Creed VR, but since 2021 it has been very quiet at the forefront of news, with a third VR port (Splinter Cell VR) coming. A high-profile property has been canceled: the Quest Store has brought in $1.5 billion in sales, but not many developers are taking advantage of it.
We believe PS VR2 will change the equation for those developers who are accustomed to selling their games on various platforms and getting paid for exclusivity. Instead of putting all his eggs in one basket (which he must have felt at risk due to Meta’s financial troubles from Reality Labs R&D), they’re now keeping Sony’s sales promises at least for the next few years. I have.
Quest 2 gives Sony an unearned relationship with an indie developer. Meta, on the other hand, will benefit from big-name brands who see PSVR 2 as an excuse to jump back into the lucrative market. Even if Quest’s port does worse, meta’s gains should outweigh Sony’s.

I don’t know how long this relaxation will last. Quest 3’s meta push into mixed reality takes the upcoming headset down a different path as Sony hasn’t released a passthrough API for gaming and only has a black and white camera. MR games (such as Resolution Games’ Spatial Ops) may default to Quest exclusive.
Quest 3, on the other hand, appears to lack eye tracking, which PS VR2 uses for both enhanced graphics and unique gameplay mechanics. For example, jump scares when you blink in The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, or characters making eye contact in Horizon. Dedicated PC VR games are rare due to their low profit margins, Might be so Check out PSVR 2 Limited Edition from a developer who relies on top-notch processing power.
Given the battle between Sony and Microsoft, it’s a welcome surprise that things haven’t turned sour between Sony and Meta (yet). Comparing the PS VR2 and the Quest 2 in terms of specs is fun, but no one wants a real “battle”.
Instead, VR gamers should welcome Sony and Meta to support each other and not claim exclusivity. And given the state of VR today, neither Sony nor Meta really can. afford Takeover war anyway. Sony, in particular, needs to sell more headsets before it can be considered a true Quest competitor beyond hardware.

With its wide OLED display, precision controls, comfortable design, and exciting new eye-tracking tech, PS VR2 harnesses the power of the PS5 hardware to great effect.
