ChatGPT showed the world that conversational AI is out of the box, allowing you to act and chat like a character. It was only a matter of time before this kind of intelligence was brought to her NPCs (non-player characters) in video games, and it still leaves me dumbfounded.
Inworld has created a platform that allows video game studios (you and me, really) to create fully interactive characters without any coding knowledge. You can publish these characters on the web and chat about any topic you like.
The character creation process can be very streamlined or as deep and complex as you choose. If you want quick results, you can write a character description, let the system best guess further settings, and then upload your 2D and 3D avatars or use other services to generate them.

If you want to talk to a famous character, living, dead, or fictional, just enter the URL of the Wikipedia page and the system will drag the information for you.
If you want to go deeper, you can actually go out on the town and tell the AI about your character’s personality, motivations, fears, stage of life, history, emotional tendencies, and interests. You can also load them with specific facts and knowledge, or import knowledge common to a group of characters in the game world. You can specify triggers that lead to do things. You can choose from a variety of voices and dialogue styles, and provide scripted interactions that help guide AI responses.
Every time you change something, you can immediately test it by speaking to the character, either in text form or by speaking to an animated avatar. Alternatively, you can roll through a library of characters created by others.

Look, this is clearly in alpha stage. There are many things these characters do that are really bad. The facial animations in this tech demo are terrible. The voice is haughty and robotic to varying degrees. But these are no frills, and in the hands of a game studio they would be much better. Also, the character talks too much and doesn’t stop even if he talks in the middle, so he has to wait his turn by repeating long monologues over and over again.
But all of this aside, it’s a phenomenal experience. There’s virtually no lag in verbal interactions, and that fact alone completely overwhelms me. In fact, they respond very quickly. Because of their tendency, if they hesitate when speaking, they will jump in and start answering before they have finished speaking.
But you’re absolutely talking to a character, so it’s really fun to see these things stay true to the character no matter where you talk to them. I built a quick model, told the inworld engine to try to answer everything with a brief philosophical quote, and popped in and invited him to lunch.

These conversational models really know how to dance. It is very fun. You can have surprisingly deep and rich conversations. Once this technology is implemented, we will soon see how much richness and immersion it will bring to the game world, especially in VR, especially as the technology develops. Scripted dialogue options and cutscenes quickly seem like frustrating relics of the past. If I were working on the next Grand Theft Auto game, I would tear my hair out trying to figure out how to make this work so well…a populated open world setting.
Additionally, people have coded these avatars into practical helpers. This is a preview of how we will soon be able to interact with all devices. Language teacher, songwriting assistant, Tinder conversation coach, personal stylist, script he doctor and even co-inventor who can come up with an idea, refine it and develop it. These bots are, quite frankly, as useful as they get.
This technology also comes with some extraordinary risks. Even if it looks like you’re talking to an innocuous game character, you’re actually talking to some company. With these characters, especially fortune tellers, relationship therapists, psychoanalysts based on Sigmund Freud, etc., it is very important that you want to talk about your deepest and darkest concerns using real details of your life. attractive.
Inworld warns against doing so, but people leak information and that information can come back and find ways to bite them. I need to make sure I understand.
You can see this technology in action in the demo game in the video below. But honestly, you have to experience this yourself. Simply sign in to Inworld Arcade, select your character, turn on your microphone, select Avatar Chat, and interact.
The speed of this change is astonishing. We are starting to feel like we are living in the future.
