Boxing Buddy training aid lets punching bags fight back

Punching bags help boxers hone their technique, but they don’t replicate one of the key aspects of real boxing. Boxing Buddy, now on Indiegogo, is designed to address that shortcoming.

Simply put, the Boxing Buddy setup consists of two padded robotic arms that are fixed at any height to a third-party sandbag. However, the arms can also be attached to trees, training manikins, or other sturdy vertical objects.

Boxing Buddy can be set to one of three modes using the included smartphone app.

There is a random sparring mode where the side, speed and frequency of arm punches are completely random. Custom Mode allows users to pre-program these variables to focus on areas that need more practice. In coach mode, the coach remotely controls your arm in real time using the app.

Additionally, within each training mode, users can choose from 1 of 4 levels of difficulty. The app tracks your progress as you progress through different modes and levels.

The entire system is reported to weigh around 2 kg (4.4 lbs) and can be set up in just minutes. A 1.5 hour charge of the Li-Ion battery gives you up to 10 hours of use.

Assuming Boxing Buddy reaches production, a $249 USD pledge will allow you to set up your own. Planned retail price is $499. You can see it in action in the video below.

Potential buyers might also want to check out the four-armed Stryk RXT-1 training robot and BotBoxer (the latter dodging user punches).
