Living Vehicle’s H2O-making, solar-winged RV slashes all ties to grid

Living Vehicle Trailers have always bridged the gap between recreational campers and full-time microhomes, but now they’re taking a big step towards becoming frontier-style off-grid homesteads. The new 4 Season HD-Pro stores Tesla Model 3 equivalent battery power, backed up by an expandable dual awning solar charging system. Place it in the middle of a snowy meadow like the one pictured and spend a season…or a lifetime.

Since Living Vehicle launched in 2017, it’s always been clear that the California company is chasing a different kind of customer than your average camper trailer company. As the name suggests, it’s an LV, not an RV. We’ve worked hard to get our trailers farther and farther off the grid while still loaded with amenities that meet the demands of coastal California, wherever they are. The new HD-Pro is better than any previous model.

Living Vehicles decided it would be happy to carry the 2023 model through to 2024. After adding impressive updates like a convertible work studio/bedroom, an atmospheric water generator and up to 58 kWh battery capacity. But it keeps moving with his 2024 model, splitting the series in two, led by his new 30-foot (9.1 m) tri-axis HD-Pro flagship.

Along with the added axles, the HD-Pro upgrades start with a 72 kWh lithium-ion battery bank to take the trailer completely off-grid. When running the Living Vehicle’s essential residential-style amenity set through an 18 kW inverter, the Living Vehicle also increases the size of its solar array because its EV-sized battery won’t last forever.

Move the air conditioner from the roof to the basement to make room for a 4,400 W solar spread. This solar spread is stacked on the roof during the ride and deployable at camp via two awnings. The HD-Pro also includes Level 2 of his EV charging in case the owner needs to charge the vehicle and drive back to visit civilization.

According to the company, the HD-Pro is designed to power completely off-grid and self-sufficient equipment such as 240 V dual-zone electric heating systems and 24 K BTU air conditioners. It relies on a rigid, closed-cell foam insulation package to provide adequate internal isolation from external temperatures of -4 to 120°F (-20 to 49°C). The air conditioner operates at a very high SEER rating of 21, ensuring the most efficient use of cooling energy.

The LV HD-Pro is designed to operate self-sufficiently, but that doesn’t mean it will operate 24/7 and 100% emission free. Living Vehicle provides available backup power, including propane tanks, generators, tow-mounted alternators, and additional deployable solar panels to help LV motorhomes/occupants stay in the dark due to severe storms or other inclement weather. Don’t be left in the middle of nowhere. Reduce solar charging.

Living Vehicle further enhances true off-grid living with an optional water production system that can literally draw potable water out of the air. Capable of delivering up to 5 gallons (18.9 L) of fresh drinking water per day, the integrated WaterGen system extracts water vapor from ambient humidity, passes it through a multi-stage filtration process, and transfers it to fresh water tanks. The system is designed to effectively reduce or replace the need for water supplies, drilling wells, or refilling off-site water tanks.

HD models come standard with a front queen bed master suite, but offer the option to upgrade to a king size bed. The bedroom also has a full-height closet and shelving/dresser unit that can optionally be replaced with a washer/dryer combo.

Living Vehicle has several other bedroom layouts, including a bunkhouse with four single beds. The mobile office layout centers around Murphy Queen his bed that folds into a mobile workstation that can be fully loaded with Apple hardware.

Looking back at the interior, the dry bathroom just behind the bedroom has a china toilet and separate shower. A composting toilet is also available. The residential-style gourmet kitchen includes standard and available amenities such as a 3-burner induction hob, electric oven, movable countertop island, 368-liter refrigerator, and dishwasher. A folding patio is across from the kitchen and he offers a 1,500 lb (680 kg) rating for al fresco dining and relaxing.

The rear of the HD is dedicated to the dining lounge with L-shaped sofas. The adjacent dining table can be lowered for use as a coffee table, transforming the space into a casual living room. With rollaway beds, the HD sleeps up to 8 people.

All the HD-Pro’s power, off-grid capabilities, and interior appointments cost the modern pioneer quite a bit. The trailer starts at US$639,995 and includes a “zero gravity lounge,” a 4K home theater system, Starlink satellite internet and an all-terrain navigation package.

But it is the flagship of the family. Those who don’t need to stock up on solar power for the sun to die can quickly shave tens of thousands of dollars off the final price. Scaling back to a battery bank and 2,000 watts of solar, the $549,995 Max has a 43 kWh battery wired to a 3,000 watt panel.

Still too rich for your blood? For MY2024, Living Vehicle will also soon launch the LT, a smaller 24-foot (7.3 m) twin-axle model that comes with Core, Max, and Pro packages with the same battery and solar specs as the HD series. Starting at $359,995, the LT brings a simplified floor plan with a small front room that can be designated as a storage and gear room, bunk room, or mobile office space. Beyond that, it has a layout similar to the HD and includes a dry bathroom, rear sofa/bed dining lounge, island kitchen, and folding deck.
