The James Brand’s newest multitool carries slimmer than a pack of gum

James Brand has released several iterations of the Ellis knife over the years, all of which are as slim and minimalist as a multi-tool pocket knife. But the new Ellis Slim tops them all as the thinnest full-length knife in the lineup. It loses some features compared to the traditional Ellis, but comes with his Sandvik steel blade from Sweden, along with some useful additions. Even for a company that prides itself on its minimalist design, this one is sleek.

To create the slimmest knife in the Ellis family, James Brand removed the scissors they added to the standard Ellis just one year ago, reducing the thickness of the knife body by 4mm. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but the company believes the 8 mm (0.31 inch) Ellis Slim is a few millimeters thinner than a pack of gum, making the pack of gum thicker than he’s 11 mm ( 0.43 inches). .

James Brand’s estimate is consistent with the 9.7 to 11 mm (0.38 to 0.45 inch) range found on the retailer’s web page, a good tape measurement for today’s 14 or 15 stick corrugated cartons. Orbit, Extra, Trident. Trident 14 pack measured at 3/8 inch (9.7 mm).

If you have a different kind of gum, you may need to pull out the measuring tape to see if the Ellis Slim is actually thinner than what you have in your pocket. It’s definitely slimmer than a pocket knife. An integrated flathead screwdriver, scraper and pry bar allow you to qualify as a lightweight multi-tool.

Surprisingly, there’s no bottle opener to top things off, but you can always pick up a titanium Halifax for that. That still leaves plenty of pocket space for your wallet, phone, keys, and even actual gum.

The Ellis Slim handle is 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) long and the 2.6 inch (6.6 cm) blade opens with the help of a slip joint, giving the knife a total length of 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) when deployed. The Swedish Sandvik 12C27 steel blade is available in straight or half-serrated styles, and the handle is finished with scales made of aluminum or he G10 composite.

At just 1.8 ounces (50 g), the Elise Slim is as sleek as it is lightweight, making it almost essential for everyday carry. You can drop it in your pocket or clip it on via an integrated wire clip, but this doesn’t appear to be included in the thickness measurement. Available for $109 or $109.
