Apple opens its first retail store in India. Apple BKC in Mumbai incorporates sustainably sourced, local materials and features light-filled interiors characterized by striking handcrafted timber ceilings.
Apple BKC is named after the larger Bandra Kurla Complex of which Apple BKC is part. The store features a sleek façade offering a generous 26 feet (8 m) of glass to maximize natural light throughout the store.
The intricately patterned ceiling is inspired by the work of Mumbai’s cane and rattan weavers. It is made from sustainably sourced wood and forms a triangle. Each wooden tile is made from his 408 pieces of wood, for a total of about 450,000 pieces. Other eye-catching design elements include two stone walls and a stainless steel staircase leading to a cantilevered mezzanine area. Stone columns and greenery also divide the interior.

The building has achieved the LEED Platinum Green Building Standard, with a focus on natural light and an externally installed solar panel array to reduce grid-based power demand.
Apple BKC was officially opened by Tim Cook on April 18th, with a second Apple Store opening in India soon, with another opening in New Delhi in the coming days.
