While searching for stars near my hometown of Pollachi, I stumbled upon the forests of the Anamarai Tiger Reserve. The further away I got from the city and its lights, the darker I saw the fireflies and the stars. Seeing hundreds of glowing fireflies at the edge of the forest and hearing stories of trees full of fireflies in the depths of the forest fascinated me. Predicting when the activity would be high, I headed to the remote areas of the reserve with the forester. I waited anxiously for the dawn. Green flashes began to appear at dusk. As the place darkened, millions of fireflies began to synchronize their light among several trees. The flash started in his single tree and continued across multiple trees like Mexican his waves. It lasted all night. I felt like I was transported to another planet. Under a starry sky, with fireflies flashing in the foreground, owls and other nocturnal creatures hooting in the distance, and elephants and leopards lurking around the corner, this was the nature experienced by our ancestors. Among the finalists in the Wildlife & Nature category was Sriram Murali, who photographed the Anamarai Tiger Reserve near his hometown of Pollachi, India (main image). While the area is a larger wildlife hotspot, it’s the millions of fireflies that steal the show after dark, says Murali, who created the image by layering several photos of this glowing swarm.

The 85-day eruption of La Palma volcano, which began on September 19, 2021, destroyed thousands of homes and displaced more than 10,000 people. Unprecedented flooding has inundated large swaths of the country and forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. Mayendit is one of his in a village disappearing underwater. Organic gardening is an art form at Ch??teau de Villandry. The original chateau was built in his 16th century and sold to Joachim Carvallo and Ann Coleman in 1906, who rebuilt the Renaissance gardens based on classical designs. Today the garden is tended by their great-grandson, Henri Carvallo, who lives with the family in stables overlooking this horticultural masterpiece. The garden has 10 full-time gardeners and is visited by about 350,000 people a year. The central grid of nine square plots is just over one hectare in size, 90% rotated with 90% seasonal vegetables, and the rest planted with boxwood and flowers. Finally, George Steinmetz was shortlisted for his drone shot of the organic gardens of the Chateau de Villandry (pictured above) in France.

Selected works from the winning entries are on display at Somerset House in London until May 1st.
