Argentinian architect Mariano Ravenna has created a dynamic little house consisting of a series of discrete white concrete volumes. The SF-FR House was designed for the specific needs of owners who are two adults and have children in a past relationship. This project helps everyone feel at home by reimagining how individuals live together and interact with each other.
“This project houses the different human dimensions, gathering in the shared spaces that every home needs, leading to encounters with others and exploration of individuality as we move from one environment to another. Through careful consideration of design elements such as space planning, material selection and lighting solutions, SF-FR House is composed of four independent cubic modules that are joined via walkways to the outer courtyard. With an overall interior space of just 56 square meters (603 square feet), it offers a new approach to small living.
One concrete module sits on top of the remaining three modules. These modules are scattered on the ground in a roughly circular pattern. The house is divided into individual zones, but without predefined uses. For example, his first two modules can be used as a living and dining room facing the surrounding courtyard. This makes the 3rd and his 4th modules used as bedrooms and bathrooms. The elevated module is accessed by an external metal spiral staircase and adjoins a large outdoor terrace with valley views.
The wet zones (kitchen and bathroom) are fixed, but the rest of the house is versatile. By incorporating modular pieces such as partitions and multipurpose furniture, spaces can be easily adapted and customized to meet the needs of the occupants without compromising aesthetics or functionality. Thus, Mariano Ravenna has come up with an innovative way to make the most of every space, whatever it may be.
Large windows are placed at strategic points to allow natural light to enter the home while providing views of the outside. A large courtyard acts as a buffer between each module, providing privacy and allowing natural light and ventilation to flow throughout the home.
The aim of the project is to create a unique sense of belonging and community in each unit by integrating different aspects of life. The idea is that living spaces can be tailored to people’s needs and preferences, making them feel safe, worthy, safe and happy in their homes.
The project also utilizes existing trees to create a protected environment for the home. The home is built using a simple concrete structural system that weaves between tree locations without damaging or having to remove them. This design allows for natural ventilation and daylighting, providing his SF-FR house with a natural cooling system in the summer and additional insulation in the winter.
