373-mile Polestar 4 e-SUV coupe trades rear window for HD screen

Years after finding footing and alleviating teething problems, Polestar seems to be full steam ahead. The company unveiled its first SUV, the Polestar 3, last October and is now releasing his second SUV soon. The Polestar 4 is a smaller, sportier SUV that combines the coupe-inspired styling and performance ambition of an SUV with the space and comfort of an SUV. Polestar’s design team not only dropped the roofline into a coupe-like profile, but also pushed out the rear window completely, creating a clean look and a unique rear seat area.

The Chinese market prefers VIP-style rear seats, so it’s not all that surprising to see Polestar do away with the rear window to create a more private atmosphere in the rear of its latest electric car. It promises to “cocoon” rear passengers in an “immersive” and “intimate” environment with reclining seats. They feel good about it when the driver hits a structure behind the vehicle while navigating the learning curve that comes with focusing on the rear view of his hanging digital rather than out the rear window. I hope you will.

Of course, it’s unnecessarily complicating the basic “eyeball + big glass panel” formula that’s worked flawlessly for almost as long as the car itself, but Polestar doesn’t blind the driver completely from behind. yeah. A rear-view camera, peeking out from the edge of the curved glass roof, feeds a suspended high-definition screen in place of a simple rear-view mirror. The company promises “a much wider field of view than you can experience in most modern cars.”

Also, if the driver wants to use the rear view like a mirror (e.g. to keep an eye on a toddler sitting in the backseat), they can do so with the camera feed turned off… which further supports the idea What does a windowless rear end is tech/design bombast for tech/design. No need to modify or complicate what already works if you want it.

However, Polestar explains that the new body-coloured rear edge treatment allows the full-length glass roof to extend above the rear passengers’ heads, adding to the unique feel of the rear seats. Additionally, the electrochromic design of the roof allows occupants to switch between opaque and transparent, further personalizing the ambience. There’s also an adjustable interior lighting system inspired by the solar system, adding another layer of ambience.

The windowless rear is derived from the 2020 Precept concept. It served as a loose blueprint for Polestar’s recent design transition. That concept was also a preview of the Polestar 4’s split Thor’s Hammer front light design, flush door handles and rear blade lights, not to mention inspired the coupe-inspired shape.

“With the Polestar 4, we take a radical new approach to SUV coupe design,” explains Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenrath. “Rather than simply modifying existing SUVs to speed up the roofline and thereby sacrifice factors such as rear headroom and comfort, a new type of vehicle that celebrates the comfort and experience of rear-seat occupants. As his SUV coupe he designed the Polestar 4 from scratch.”

When it comes to electric powertrain tuning, the 191-inch (484 cm) Polestar 4 is all about performance. Polestar notes that the new model is the fastest production car ever, with 0-62 mph (100 km/h) he promised a time of 3.8 seconds. That time he’s associated with a 536-horsepower (400 kW) dual-motor model, but even his modest 268-horsepower single-motor version promises a sharp, sporty ride in rear-wheel drive orientation. .

The single-motor RWD 4 offers maximum range. Equipped with the 102 kWh long-range battery pack option, Polestar expects 373 miles (600 km, WLTP) before needing a charge. The 348-mile (560 km) long-range dual-motor variant doesn’t lose much of its driving autonomy thanks to a decoupling feature that allows him to decouple the front motor and commute more efficiently as his RWD.

All Polestar 4 variants are equipped with 200 kW DC fast charging and 22 kW AC charging capabilities, complete with an electric charging door. Bi-directional charging with vehicle-to-load capability allows the car to power external devices.

The Polestar 4 also features a full boat of the latest technology delivered to your fingertips via a 15.4-inch touch widescreen powered by the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and nicely integrated with Google via Android Automotive.
