final thoughts
Coming into this review, I was confident that I could just drop the new DIMMs onto the AM5 test platform, run some benchmarks, take pictures of course, and write it all down. But that wasn’t the case, as memory overclocking (EXPO or not) has become an exercise in frustration with our particular sample his motherboard and processor.
I’d like to think I’m just doing something wrong, but the news of potential EXPO related voltage issues on the AM5 feels all too familiar. It really scares me to see the pads on the Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 7950X3D. that’s all 1.3V for a long time.
But this isn’t a review of Ryzen memory overclocking, we’re just looking at Lexar’s memory kits that happen to have EXPO certification on their packages. We were not able to verify compatibility with AMD’s overclocking profiles, but we were able to drop these DIMMs onto an Intel board and have them run at their rated speeds and latencies with just one click without issue.
Even with 8000 MT/s kits available from multiple vendors, Intel’s DDR5 frequencies seem to be limited. But for AMD users, I think 6000 MT/s is more than necessary because of the whole FCLK/Infinity Fabric. Now, hopefully there will be no barriers to entry for prospective buyers as Lexar has put in. These are his 1.3 volts in his EXPO profile. This seems to be the real limit of memory OC for AM5.
