In an unusual move, Intel’s global communications director Bernard Fernandes confirmed on Twitter this morning that the chip giant is preparing to rebrand its chips for the second half of the year. Citing the company as being at an “inflection point” before launching his client CPUs in the Meteor Lake architecture later this year, Intel has clearly branded its first large-scale chiplet-based consumer CPU. The tweet in question doesn’t specifically say what it’s addressing, but the context and timing suggests that Intel is preparing to change its branding strategy for its Core family of consumer chips. The current core paradigm has been established since late 2008 with the launch of generational core families and the now familiar i3/i5/i7 tiers. Intel has since added the i9 layer and used the suffix a few times over the past 15 years, but the core branding has remained relatively consistent across the 13th generation of parts.
However, if the rumors are true, the Core family will soon lose the i-series moniker.Based on benchmark data uploaded to Ashes of Singularity Benchmark Results Database – A notorious source of leaks from hardware testers who neglect to turn off result reporting – Intel Core Ultra 5 1003H was found in the database. This means that Intel intends to phase out the Core i-series brand for the new Core Ultra brand.
