Drinking cola while eating salty potato chips or peanuts can enhance their flavor. The acids in these beverages appear to open sodium channels in taste receptors on the tongue. Adding this acid to foods therefore allows manufacturers to use less salt, which can increase the risk of high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
Daniel Moll Collier of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and his colleagues alternately applied two aqueous solutions to the chip.
