I’m disappointed. I’ve been waiting for AMD and Nvidia to offer more affordable options for this generation of GPUs that could really push 1440p into the mainstream, but I’ve been reviewing them for the past week. The content did not meet my expectations.
Both Nvidia and AMD will release new GPUs this week targeting the budget PC gaming market. After 1080p dominated the mainstream for his seven years, I expected this generation to offer a card worth his 1440p. Instead, Nvidia started shipping the $399 RTX 4060 Ti today. The company positions it as a 1080p card rather than the 1440p sweet spot it should be at this price point.
AMD is aggressively pricing the new Radeon RX 7600 at just $269, making it arguably a better match for 1080p resolution at that price point and performance. I wish there was an option between $300 and $400 that offered enough performance to definitely jump into the 1440p era.
According to Valve’s latest Steam data, over 60% of PC gamers play at 1080p. That said, GPU makers like AMD and Nvidia don’t need to target 1440p on their mass-sold cards as demand is likely to be low. One reason for the low demand could be that monitor upgrades aren’t a common purchase for PC gamers, or they have to pay more for graphics cards that support 1440p.Perhaps that’s why both of these cards are not yet If you’re only targeting 1080p, why ship with more VRAM? At lower resolutions, you don’t need that much VRAM for texture quality.
I tested both cards at 1080p and 1440p to see where they stand in the GPU market at the moment. We can say that the RTX 4060 Ti basically offers his 1440p performance identical to the RTX 3070’s 1440p for $399. That’s $100 less than the RTX 3070’s $499 price tag. In October 2020, he said he would offer a 1440p sweet spot for games during that period. It’s been nearly three years since then, and I think we can expect even better performance at 1440p. Why is yesterday’s 1440p card suddenly Nvidia’s 1080p card?
Looking at the performance of the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 4060 Ti, the difference is around 12% at 1440p. It’s not something that’s been expected for generations and it’s very disappointing. I’m not the only one disappointed here. Hardware Unboxed calls the RTX 4060 Ti “laughably bad”, while Gamers Nexus says “don’t buy” the RTX 4060 Ti. The RTX 3060 Ti outperformed the RTX 4060 Ti in some of our Hardware Unboxed tests. ah.
It’s clear that performance is debatable here. The difference between the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070 is around 30% at 1440p, and the price difference is $599 vs. $200 for the RTX 4070. The difference is $100 more than the previous generation ($399 for the RTX 3060 Ti, $499 for the RTX 3070), and I think it’s here that my 1440p expectations of him for the mainstream line up with reality. If Nvidia wants the RTX 4060 Ti to be closer to the RTX 4070 in terms of performance, it probably needs to be closer in price as well. After all, the performance difference between the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070 is around 10-15%.
So is the DLSS 3 a reason to buy? Normally this is the case with the 40 series, but my experience here is mixed. We tested DLSS 3 on the RTX 4060 Ti, and it’s the first time we’ve tested Nvidia’s latest upscaling tech, and we found it didn’t give much of a framerate boost. Forza Horizon 5. Running without DLSS 3 or extreme settings, the game hit 98fps at 1440p on the RTX 4060 Ti, but only increased to 102fps with DLSS 3. That’s only a 4% performance improvement, much lower than what I’m used to seeing. At 1080p, it’s about an 18% difference. Nvidia says it could be the cause Forza Horizon 5 Generating frames at high resolution takes a long time due to CPU limitations.
Thankfully microsoft flight simulator With DLSS 3 enabled, performance jumped to 114fps at 1440p, nearly double the 62fps without it. Cyberpunk 2077 We also got 84fps at 1440p on the RTX 4060 Ti, compared to 51fps with DLSS 2 alone.
On the 1080p side, AMD’s Radeon RX 7600 offers solid performance, especially if you want to experiment with settings that aren’t maxed out. I think most gamers who play at 1080p are used to this. As is often the case with AMD GPUs, they are only really inferior when it comes to ray tracing performance. Watch Dogs Legion The RX 7600 runs at just 21fps at 1080p with Ultra Ray Tracing maxed out, while the RTX 3060 Ti manages 67fps thanks to DLSS 2.
with a title like gear 5 and shadow of the tomb raider, The RX 7600 will reach over 100fps at 1080p. assassin’s creed valhalla 93fps is pretty close.could not test Forza Horizon 5 The game booted perfectly on the RX 7600 as I got the game warning when I started the title. Game settings can no longer be changed. Forza Horizon 5 An update may be required to fully recognize this new card. AMD was investigating the situation at the time of this article’s publication.
At 1440p the RX 7600 falls short of the 60fps mark. Metro Exodus Enhanced, return, Watch Dogs Legionand Cyberpunk 2077. If you want to play the latest and greatest games, it’s hard to recommend his RX 7600 for 1440p gaming.
Aside from raw performance, there’s been a lot of discussion in the PC gaming community lately about 8GB of VRAM on the GPU. Nvidia is sticking with 8GB of VRAM for the RTX 4060 Ti, while AMD’s RX 7600 offers only 8GB. Unfortunately, Nvidia has again stepped back from the RTX 3060 Ti’s 256-bit memory bus to a 128-bit memory bus. Nvidia claims a larger 32MB L2 cache (just 4MB on the 3060 Ti) can counter the memory bandwidth drop, but the RTX 4060 Ti’s disappointing 1440p performance suggests otherwise.
Modern games increasingly require 8GB or more of VRAM, especially at 1440p and above, to improve texture quality, ray tracing, and overall visual performance. Perhaps that’s why Nvidia is selling his 4060 Ti card to the 1080p crowd, with the 16GB version for $499 he launches in July. But why buy his 16GB version of this card which has the same limitations at 1440p I would have liked to have seen the middle ground with 12 GB of VRAM on the RTX 4060 Ti.
One of the advantages of the RTX 4060 Ti is power efficiency. It’s really impressive. The RTX 3060 Ti has 200 watts of total graphics power, most of which we used for gaming. The RTX 4060 Ti has a total graphics power of 160 Watts, but we’ve seen it drop below 140 Watts in many games. It’s nice to see the new generation of GPUs reduce their power consumption, especially when there’s not always a trend to increase efficiency from generation to generation.
Nvidia’s next offering is the base-level RTX 4060, which debuts in July and will cost $299, but nothing works at 1440p. Nvidia and AMD are clearly having the usual price war here.Because AMD explained first The Verge The RX 7600 was priced at $299, but the price changed to $269 just days after Nvidia’s RTX 4060 announcement. match? Absolutely not.
The RTX 4060 Ti and RX 7600 are on another level as a result of AMD’s aggressive pricing here, but it will be interesting to see how the RTX 4060 compares. The RTX 4060 Ti is about 30% faster than the RX 7600 at both 1080p and 1440p, so there’s a gap where the RTX 4060 fits and could beat AMD for an extra $30.
It’s nice to see affordable GPUs available in this generation after the massive price hikes in high-end versions. I’m still waiting to see what AMD can offer to compete with his RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 Ti. Aggressive pricing for the 1080p portion of the market suggests that something could be done to push 1440p into the mainstream.
