A painting by Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), one of the founding fathers of the United States. He is in London in 1767, wearing a blue suit with elaborate gold braids and buttons. A far cry from the simple dresses that inspired him when he was president. In his later years he was the ambassador to France. During his time in London, Franklin was the leading voice of American interests in England. He wrote a popular essay on behalf of the colony and helped to bring about the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1765. This painting is by David Martin and is currently on display at the White House.
