WIKIPEDIA – Set in Italy, Emilia Galotti tells the story of a noble young woman of the bourgeoisie. The absolutist Prince of Guastara, Hetre Gonzaga, becomes obsessed with the idea of making Emilia his lover after their first meeting. So he gives the scheming Marinelli of Chamberlain the right to do anything to delay the prearranged marriage of Emilia and Count Appiani. Marinelli then hired a criminal and killed the Count on his way to the wedding shortly afterwards. Emilia is soon transported safely to the Prince’s nearby summer cottage. Unlike her mother Claudia, Emilia is still unaware of the true meaning of her plan. After some time, the prince’s former mistress, Countess Orsina, also comes to her mansion. Out of her frustration with her prince’s harsh rejection, she tries to persuade Emilia’s father Odoardo to take revenge on Count Appiani by stabbing her prince to death. However, Odoardo hesitated to agree to this proposal and decided to leave her vengeance in the hands of God.
