NUC is dead, long live NUC!
Intel’s NUCs have been discontinued, but form factors certainly haven’t. A number of NUC clones have been offered by various suppliers, most of which are as good as the original, but it seems that only his ASUS is licensed to inherit the NUC. Intel and ASUS have agreed that the latter will sell and support 10th to 13th generation NUC devices, as well as develop and sell new generations.
The deal could mean the NUC line expands to encompass more devices than just the tiny PCs we’re used to. It is believed that ASUS may make DIY kits for similar devices, but could move to DIY laptops as well. Framework aside, white-box laptops have all but disappeared, so this will be very interesting. The idea that we might soon be able to buy laptop-sized NUC-branded motherboards and processors that allow us to build new systems or refresh old ones is pretty cool.
NUC’s cancellation may have been the best thing that ever happened.
