Marble Hill Coffee Table/Wall Art is the first table of a limited edition collection called quilts. The idea for this collection came from researching textiles made by African-Americans during enslavement and beyond. The women of Gees Bend a small, remote, Black community in Alabama – created magnificent quilts starting in the 1920s. Its a series that pays tribute to their proud traditions, but expands beyond that singular focus. Desirees tables are composed of bold, improvisational arrangements, with intention to transform wood into functional abstract art. Creating quilts helped the women of Gees Bend survive financially and spiritually throughout consistent discrimination. The quilts collection satisfies the same needs within Desirees life. The Marble Hill Coffee Table is the only table that gets its inspiration from a women not from Gee’s Bend. This table is modeled after Alexia Abegg quilt shown above. The legs are simple to assemble with just a dowel taken in and out of the slot. The wood selected will vary slightly, making each piece one of a kind.
